If it is several millimeters or 1cm should be just vacant, it has no necessity to purchase. If only suitable spacer like several washers is put and exchanging its part for the long bolt, it was enough length and this was unnecessary. If you can make a tapped hole, it just cuts to required length, and cut the tap, it would be ok... It is like "the greater hides the less".
