[Valentino Rossi, the first champion of the new MotoGP™ class! Two consecutive championships achieved!]
    GRAND PRIX 2002 Compilation Contents
Due to a drastic change in the regulations, the 500cc class, which had been in existence for more than 50 years, was replaced by the MotoGP class, which entered a new era.
The 02 season, in which 500cc 2-stroke machines and 990cc 4-stroke machines ran together.
Valentino Rossi was the last champion of the 500cc class last year.
In addition to Max Biaggi, Rossi's biggest rival, his teammate Toru Ukawa and the 2001 season 250cc champion Daijiro Kato will be in his sights.
Rossi, who had brought out the best performance from the RC211V from the start of the season, took a series of victories up to the 9th round, although he lost the win in the second round in South Africa after a battle with Ukawa at the top of the championship.
However, in the 10th round in the Czech Republic, he retired due to a rear tire burst, and his winning streak came to an end at seven.
In this race, his biggest rival Biaggi took his first win of the season, but he was unable to stop Rossi's momentum.
Rossi won 11 out of 16 races and became the first MotoGP class champion with his incredible strength.
Before the season, it looked as if the 2-stroke 500cc machines would have the advantage, but the Honda RC211V showed its high level of perfection, and by the end of the race, the 4-stroke 990cc machines had won all the races.
The number of 4-stroke machines, which had been 7 out of 21 at the beginning of the event, eventually reached 13, showing the superiority of the 4-stroke machines.
Also, Japanese rider Ukawa won for the first time in his class in the second round in South Africa.
(Japanese Ranking: Toru Ukawa 3rd, Norifumi Abe 6th, Daijiro Kato 7th, Shinya Nakano 11th, Nobuatsu Aoki 12th, etc.)
