■What is a JE piston?
JE is an American manufacturer specializing in forged pistons with a history of over 60 years.Founded in 1950.In the beginning, the company produced many pistons for 4-wheeled vehicles, and their high performance became widely known in NASCAR and drag racing.Today, nearly 100% of NASCAR teams use JE pistons, and many teams in the NHRA Top Fuel class, where the 400-meter run is only 4 seconds, use JE pistons.It was also specified for the GM Aurora engine used in IndyCar.
Of course, there are many top drag teams on two wheels who have won many championships with JE.It is also supported by many of the top constructors in AMA racing.All of these facts prove the outstanding reliability and amazing high performance of JE under the severe conditions of ultra-high temperature and ultra-high load.
■JE Piston Material
The JE piston is characterized by its material.JE uses an alloy called A2618 for its forged pistons instead of the more common 4000 series silicon aluminum alloy.This is the material with the strongest high-temperature strength of all aluminum alloys.JE uses this A2618 as the material for the piston after hot forging and careful heat treatment (some exceptions are pistons made of 4000 series aluminum alloy).
■Processing method and finished shape
What is more characteristic is the processing method and the finished shape of the piston.Normally, the piston has a tapered shape with a wide end because of the heat distribution, but strictly speaking, the heat distribution is slightly different even on the circumference of the piston, so it is ideal to shape the piston according to the heat distribution.
Specifically, since the alloy expands more in the area with higher heat distribution, the finished cross-sectional shape of the alloy must be an ellipse with long front and rear sides when cold in order to obtain a perfect circle shape at the operating temperature.Especially, A2618, which is used for the JE piston, has a higher thermal expansion coefficient than that of the 4000 series silicon aluminum alloy, and this processing is indispensable.However, it was impossible to cut the metal into an elliptical shape with an ordinary NC lathe.Therefore, JE has introduced a special NC lathe called an elliptical machine to solve this problem.Of course, it can only be done because JE has a vast amount of know-how on piston heat distribution.
■Numerous advantages of advanced technology
With these advanced machining technologies, JE pistons can be installed with almost the same piston clearance as stock pistons.The design of the piston head is based on the combustion chamber, valve diameter, valve angle, etc., and the optimum shape and compression ratio are set for each model.
