Five things you may not know about SHARK motorcycle helmets… - SHARK helmet

This year marks the 30th anniversary of French brand, SHARK Helmets. Founded by former professional racers in 1989, the company has gone to become one of the world’s leading helmet makers – and what’s more, a sponsor of our #ride5000miles campaign.

Here are five things that you may not know about SHARK Helmets:

  • SHARK Helmets boast a raft of ‘firsts’

They were the first to use carbon fiber in a commercially available motorcycle safety helmet in 1991 with the XRC. SHARK was also the first to introduce a dual homologated flip-front helmet to the range in 2008 with the EvoLine, they introduced the first helmet with integrated LEDs built-in with the SKWAL in 2015 and this year, they were the first helmet manufacturer to have, in all sizes, an FIM homologated helmet for circuit racing, the Race-R Pro GP FIM Racing #1 – the list goes on!

  • They file – on average – five patents a year

Innovation is key for SHARK Helmets, so much so that they invest 8-10% of their revenue into it. Working closely with top riders across varying championships means that SHARK benefit from the feedback of their helmets in some of the most demanding environments. This direct feedback aids the company’s research and development of the whole range. The advances and changes developed through racing activity helps to improve the performance of every single SHARK helmet sold across the globe.

  • SHARK Helmets develop helmets from the inside out

While traditionally helmets have been developed using clay models, SHARK helmets now reverse engineer their helmets, working from the inside out and forming the helmet around the head.

  • It’s the choice of champions

Just take a look at the starting grids and you’ll see a lot of SHARK Helmets – Jorge Lorenzo, Johann Zarco, Miguel Oliveira, Sam Lowes, Alex Lowes and Tom Sykes are all sporting SHARK. Throughout its 30 year history, the brand has been synonymous with world champions including Raymond Roche, Carl Fogarty and Troy Corser.

  • There are 25 models in the range and they’re sold in over 60 countries

Covering everything from open-face, full face, off-road, on-road and everything in between. New models and graphics are launched every year with race replicas available on a variety of models.
