Mick Doohan won three consecutive championships in 1996.This year, attention was focused on riders who would challenge the absolute champion.
The first of these is teammate Alex Cribile.
The previous year, he had defeated Doohan in a close battle, and much was expected of him this season.
However, he crashed in qualifying for the seventh round of the season in the Netherlands. He suffered an injury to his left hand that required months of treatment and dropped him out of title contention.
On the other hand, Japanese riders such as Tadayuki Okada, Nobuatsu Aoki, and the Takuma brothers made great strides.
Okada, in particular, showed great performance in the 5th round of the Austrian GP, finishing 2nd on the podium despite his injury.
But that didn't stop Doohan.
In the third round in Spain, he gave up the top spot on the podium to Crivile, but after that he won back-to-back races.Won 9 consecutive pole-to-wins before winning the title in the 11th round at the British GP.
Furthermore, with 12 wins out of 15 races this season, he broke the record for most wins in a season set by Giacomo Agostini in 1972, and won the championship for the fourth consecutive year with an unrivaled performance.
*1997 Japanese Ranking: Tadayuki Okada 2nd, Nobuatsu Aoki 3rd, Takuma Aoki 5th, Norifumi Abe 7th.
