    ◇By integrating the throttle tube and the heater inside, the grip part is reduced in diameter to the same size as the standard grip of the vehicle, and the styling with a sense of unity is realized.
    ◇A simple structure with only a control button and an indicator built into the left grip for ON / OFF of the switch and the temperature adjustment of three levels, realizing a styling with a sense of unity while improving operability.
    ◇The optimal arrangement of the heaters focuses on the fingertips, which are especially prone to getting cold when operating the brake and clutch, resulting in a warmer feeling while consuming the same amount of current as conventional products.

    ■Development concept
    Honda's "grip heaters" have been developed with the priority of being as "close" as possible to the grips used on Honda motorcycles.In the development of Honda motorcycles, the importance of grips for accelerator operation, clutch and brake operation is high, and a variety of materials and thicknesses have been considered.Removing such important grips and installing "grip heaters" as an optional accessory can lead to a risk of anxiety for the user in order to obtain comfort.Up to now, Honda R&D Center has been making efforts to realize the same characteristics as the rubber material used in Honda motorcycles and the same thickness as much as possible.

    However, we received many comments from many users such as "the operation feeling changes" and "the feeling of wearing the grip heater comes out".In response, the Honda Motorcycle R&D Co., Ltd. began development of a new grip heater based on the concept of "a grip heater with minimal fitment.In the development of the system, we made the best use of the technology we have cultivated so far, and promoted it with the keywords of "more warmth than ever" and "further improvement of operability".

    The development of the sport grip heater started with a thorough analysis of the current model.The development team members brought a car equipped with a grip heater to the extremely cold test course and tried to analyze every detail, from the feeling of the fit, operability, to the way the fingers warm up, by experiencing it themselves.Normally, when a grip heater is developed, the developer of the electrical system is in charge of the development, but this time, the developer of the non-electrical system was selected, and the development was promoted by changing the idea to the user's viewpoint greatly.

    As a result, we realized the development of the "Sports Grip Heater", a grip heater that is warmer and easier to operate than ever before, without the feeling of being worn to the limit according to the development concept.

    ■Power consumption and battery voltage monitoring system
    Honda's stock grip heater is a product developed jointly by Honda R&D Center, Koito Manufacturing Co., Ltd. which is strong in electric systems such as headlights, and Mitsubishi Cable Industries, Ltd. which is strong in research and development of electric systems and wiring systems in the automobile industry.

    Honda's grip heaters have been developed as Honda stock products through repeated installation tests on Honda motorcycles, with a focus on not affecting handling stability while giving maximum consideration to the rider's ease of use.

    Electronic items that generate heat tend to consume a lot of power and place a heavy load on the motorcycle battery.In this respect, the maximum power consumption of Honda's grip heater is 28W (conventional model), which is almost the same level of power consumption as that of a motorcycle blinker to generate heat.In addition, the maximum power consumption of the newly developed sports grip heater is minimized, and it is a gentle design grip heater that does not affect the motorcycle itself, strongly supporting a safe and comfortable motorcycle life.

    Also, Honda's grip heater has a battery voltage monitoring system built into the control switch.When the battery voltage drops, the power supply to the grip heater is automatically turned off to reduce the effect on the motorcycle.In developing the new sports grip heater, it was essential to have this battery voltage monitoring system as a stock product. However, in order to avoid the feeling of wearing this system, we have moved this system to the middle of the harness and built it into the inside of the vehicle body. By doing so, we succeeded in minimizing the size of the control switch and realized a "grip heater with no sense of attachment to the limit" without compromising functionality.

    ■Styling
    Honda grip heaters are the most advanced grip heaters for motorcycles, with a battery voltage monitoring system and SUS-FFC (flexible flat circuit) heating elements.

    However, we have received many requests from many users that they do not want to change the operation feeling or do not want to make it feel worn.Therefore, we promote the development to meet this demand.First of all, the fundamental idea of the grip heater has been changed.Until now, not only Honda but also many other grip heaters have adopted a form in which the grip rubber is removed from the standard throttle grip and the grip heater is placed over the throttle pipe.Although this form of grip has the advantage of versatility in that it can be used for many models, it has the disadvantage that the diameter of the grip is inevitably large.Therefore, the sport grip heater adopts the method of molding the grip rubber directly to the throttle tube and replacing the entire throttle tube.In addition, the grip pattern and rubber material are the same as those of the standard grip, and the grip diameter of 31.6Φ is almost the same as that of 31.0Φ of the standard grip.It has a warm and comfortable grip without changing the operation feeling.

    In addition, the presence of a control switch to adjust the temperature of the grip heater at hand was also a major problem in terms of "fitment".Therefore, in the sports grip heater, the "temperature control function" and the "voltage monitoring function" that constitute the control switch are divided.
    By placing "the voltage monitoring function" in the middle of the harness and storing it in the vehicle body, "the temperature control function" has been downsized, and the temperature control switch has been placed in a location that is easy to operate and ergonomic.This temperature control switch operates three temperature settings with a button.The number of blinking LED lamps built into the switch indicates the temperature in three stages.
    In addition, the temperature control is operated by pressing and holding the button for more than 0.5 seconds, which prevents accidental operation when operating it at hand, such as with a blinker switch.

    ■Temperature setting
    Until now, Honda grip heaters have been available in two types: a "half-round type" grip heater for moped and scooter models and a "full-round type" grip heater for sport models due to their power consumption.Both types use SUS-FFC (Flexible Flat Circuit), a thin steel plate as a heating element.
    A half-wrapped type with SUS-FFC was available for models with small power generation capacity, and a full-wrapped type with SUS-FFC was available for sports models with larger power generation capacity.

    However, in the development stage, what we felt when we actually used the grip heater was that the "feeling of temperature" was different depending on the state of contact between the grip and the hand during driving.For example, the fingers on both the left and right sides of the palm have many opportunities to leave the grip in order to grip the brake or clutch, whereas the inside of the palm (palmar side) remains in constant contact with the grip.Therefore, when the temperature is adjusted to the palm side, the finger side feels cold, and when the temperature is adjusted to the finger side, the palm side feels hot.
    Therefore, in the Sports Grip Heater, the layout and width of SUS-FFC used for the heating element were largely changed, and the temperature setting of the finger side was about 20 degrees higher than that of the palm side.This ensures the optimum temperature on both the palm side and the finger side during running, and provides an unprecedented warm feeling.
